This note is NP EXPLAINS. The stamp is verified. It was checked at 8:53 am IST on 16 October 2026, and the post went up at 12:49 pm IST. The judgment is 2026 INSC 1132. Bar & Bench, Mint and Business Standard report it, with the Supreme Court PDF.

On 15 October 2026 a bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih upheld a Bombay High Court order of 20 January 2023. That High Court order had quashed Yes Bank's write-down of ₹8,415 crore of Additional Tier 1 bonds. The write-down was on 14 March 2020. Appeals by Yes Bank, the Reserve Bank of India and the Centre were dismissed.

AT1 bonds, in the plain words of the caption, are perpetual bonds that act as a bank's loss cushion. They pay higher interest, and they carry higher risk. If a bank is in difficulty, they can be written down, including to zero. The court's point, as the caption records it, was that the method here was wrong. This note does not go past that.

The timeline is short. The final reconstruction scheme took effect on 13 March 2020. The write-down clause had been removed from the draft, so the scheme that took effect did not contain it. The next day, 14 March 2020, the administrator wrote the AT1 bonds down. The Bombay High Court set that write-down aside in 2023. The Supreme Court has kept that result.

Coupons are a separate line. Annual coupon payments, as set out in the information memorandum, remain unaffected. That line is not an order for an automatic lump-sum refund of the ₹8,415 crore principal. This note does not say bondholders have been paid that principal back in one sum. It does not say when, or whether, any principal will be paid. Those questions are outside what the reports used here decide.

Mint reports that Yes Bank shares were down about 14.5 percent. That is a reported market move on the day of the coverage. It is not advice to buy or sell. The subject of this note is the legality of the write-down procedure, not a view on the shares.

What is verified is the bench, the citation 2026 INSC 1132, the dates of the scheme, the write-down and the High Court order, the dismissal of the three appeals, and the line that coupons under the information memorandum remain unaffected. What is not claimed is a lump-sum refund of the principal, or any view on the shares beyond Mint's reported move of about 14.5 percent.
