This note is verified. The reel was posted at 7:27 pm IST on 20 October 2026. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai that day. The caption's account of Jaishankar is that the talks focused on trade, energy, technology, defence and people-to-people ties.
The US State Department's readout of the meeting, dated 20 October, uses a different list. It says the Secretary and the Minister discussed regional and global issues, including developments in the Middle East. It says Rubio reiterated that increased energy trade with the United States can diversify India's supply chains while meeting demand. It says he commended recent progress in bilateral defence and civil-nuclear cooperation, and advocated the increased purchase of US technologies and systems. Those sentences are the readout. They are not the five headings in the caption's account of Jaishankar. Each list stays with the source that printed it.
On the trade deal, the caption quotes Rubio in these words: "We're very, very close... about as close as you can be without having an executed agreement." It also records him saying there was "a small number of items left to wrap up." The State Department's remarks page, from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai on 20 October, prints the same answer with a gap. The printed line is: "We're very, very close. I would say we're about as close as you can be without (inaudible) agreement." The page then has "a small number of items to wrap up," without the caption's "left." Hindustan Times reported the Mumbai remarks under a headline that the deal is very close, with some items left. The caption also names AP, AFP and the New Indian Express. This note uses the pages it could open: the readout, the remarks, and Hindustan Times.
The deal is not signed. No date for a signing has been announced. On the remarks page Rubio says he hopes for news fairly soon, and that a signature might follow. That is a hope in the transcript. It is not a calendar date, and it is not an executed agreement. "Very close" and "unsigned" are both on the record in the caption.
Rubio called India "a refining superpower." The caption says he will visit Reliance's Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat on 21 October. The visit is ahead of him in that line. It is not described as a visit already made.
Rubio and Jaishankar laid a wreath at the 26/11 memorial at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel. The caption places that wreath on this visit. The remarks page also places Rubio's press remarks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. The wreath and the remarks are both at that hotel in these sources. The caption does not say the press remarks were the wreath.
Monday's roundup, posted at 9:28 pm IST on 19 October, recorded an earlier line from Rubio in Samarkand. There he said a US-India trade deal was very close, and the note recorded that the deal was not signed. That item is in India & World, 19 Oct. The Mumbai remarks are a later statement, on 20 October. The evening roundup of 20 October carries a short version of this meeting: India & World, 20 Oct.
The frame on this page is from the reel. The caption credits the footage to the US Department of State and the US Embassy in India. The credit used here is that line, marked public domain.
